‘Round the Mountain Canoe and Kayak race results
May, 11, 2019 – Saranac Lake, New York
The Adirondack Watershed Alliance (AWA) hosted the annual ‘Round the Mountain Canoe and Kayak races in Saranac Lake on Saturday. 59 boats in a wide variety of boat categories turned out for the event. There was a Voyageur Canoe team from the Saranac Middle School, several 4 person teams, a variety of canoes and kayaks, a couple of guide boats and an SUP going around Dewey Mountain. Several families were out on the water to celebrate Mother’s Day!
Paddlers gather at Ampersand Bay Resort and head out on the course that follows the left side of Lower Saranac Lake, turns down the Saranac River in front of Bluff Island, passes under Route 3 at the Second Pond Boat Launch, goes over a carry around the Lower Locks, crosses Oseetah Lake and ends at the cedar tree finish line in Saranac Lake Village.
The event was designated as a New York Marathon Canoe and Kayak Race Association points race. The fastest time of the day went to Ed Joy of High Springs Florida, in a Surf Ski crossing the finish line in 1:28:05. He was followed by an Epic Tandem Surf Ski paddled by Roger Gocking of Saranac Lake and Eileen Visser of Potsdam in 1:28:10. The fastest tandem canoe was Becky Sutter of Saranac Lake and Bob Cooley of Scotia in 1:39:31. The fastest solo canoe was Morgan Hoven of Clifton Springs in a Placid Boatworks boat in 1:41:45. The fastest guide boat was the father and son team of Ben and Elia Rochon of Senneville, Quebec in 2:16:48. The fastest 4 person canoe was “The 4 Stooges of Vermont” – Clyde Yarnell, Mike Malley, Mark McAndrew, and Dan King in 1:38:18 Roger Henry and Alec Davis won the over 70 canoe class.
The AWA would like to thank the Ampersand Bay Resort for hosting the start of the race. Thanks also to the Adirondack Amateur Radio Association for providing safety communications, The Saranac Lake Marina for the loan of a safety boat and all of the other volunteers who assisted in the successful completion of the event.
The AWA is teaming up with the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and area outfitters to host the Celebrate Paddling Invitational canoe, kayak, guide boat and stand up paddle board races on Lake Flower on June 30. The event will feature 1 mile Voyageur Canoe Challenges, youth and family races; and a 10 – 12 mile marathon out to Oseetah Lake and back.
