2013 Adirondack Challenge Flatwater Canoe Race

Sunday, July 21 - on Indian Lake

Pre registration Required

The Adirondack Challenge Flat Water Canoe Races will take place at the NYSDEC Indian Lake Island Campground boat launch.  Due to anticipate space limitations all teams (Pro and Amateur) are required to preregister by July 15, 2013.  We will have a boat drop off and pick up and turn around at the launch and will have signage to alternative parking close to the start line.  Please have all team members on your registration form when submitting your application. Thank you for your cooperation.

Pre race information including camping, parking and meal info will be available at macscanoe.com.  Pro sign in 9:00 AM.  First start at 10:00 AM.  Amateur classes will follow at 10:30 AM

A 15–mile, four–person team, international canoeing event on Indian Lake in Hamilton County.  Total purse of over $12,500. Start and Finish Line is at the NYSDEC Boat Launch on Route 30 in the Town of Lake Pleasant near the entrance to the DEC campground at Lewey Lake. The featured pro race is a mixed team of 2 men and 2 women in Stock Class C-4’s. There will be a prize purse for the top ten mixed teams.

There will be additional pro races for teams of all women, all men and a senior division of teams with a combined age of 250+ years in the boat - proof of age required. Cash awards will be distributed to the top three teams in each competitive class. A competitive class will be determined with 4 or more boats in the category on the start line.

The New York State College C-4 Challenge will take place with college teams from across the Empire State competing for a Challenge Cup Trophy. There will also be amateur racing on a 10 mile course for C-4’s, and canoes and kayaks according to NYMCRA class specifications.

Entry fee is $25 per person for amateur class participants, $40 per person for pro classes.

The Adirondack Paddle Challenge is organized by the Adirondack Watershed Alliance (AWA.) The AWA was formed to assure the continued promotion and organization of paddle sport activities; develop a stewardship network to enhance recreational opportunities; and provide outdoor employment. We coordinate the Adirondack Canoe and Kayak race series; offer clinics and trips; and encourage cooperation between all recreational users of the waterways of the Adirondack Forest Preserve.

Amateur racing categories will include one person and two person Adirondack Guideboats, Solo Recreation, C-1 Stock and C-1 Amateur, Touring and Unlimited Kayaks, C-2 Stock and C-2 Amateur for men, women and mixed classes.  There will also be a C-4 Stock Amateur race.  Pre-registration is required.

The DEC boat launching facility we will be using is the access for the Indian Lake Islands Campground.  We are anticipating the campground will be at or near capacity and there will be limited parking available at the boat launch.  We will offer a boat drop off area and directions to nearby parking for participants.  Please watch for updates on macscanoe.com.

AWARDS will take place at approximately 3:30PM at the Adirondack Challenge Festival site in Byron Park.  All preregistered participants will be eligible for an Adirondack Challenge Flatwater Canoe Race T-shirt and a meal ticket redeemable at the festival.

The Adirondack Challenge Flatwater Canoe Race is part of a full day of activities hosted on and around the waterways of Indian Lake.  There is an Adiorondack Challenge Whitewater Invitational race on Sunday afternoon and a full day of festivities occurring in Byron Park and on the streets of Indian Lake.

There will be designated parking locations on the outskirts of the festival area.  Registered participants will receive a parking pass to allow them to park close to the events and take advantage of shuttles to and from the festival area.   Live music, demonstrations, food and the awards ceremony will take place on Sunday afternoon in Byron Park.

C-4 Stock Class Specifications: In an effort to make the competition about the team of paddlers and not the boat, organizers have identified the most readily available boats to base class specifications upon. Boats must weigh a minimum of 55 pounds, and be designed by the manufacturer to accommodate 4 paddlers. Wenonah’s Minnesota 3 (with 4 seats) and Minnesota 4 are built primarily for back country travel but perform admirably in a competitive event against similar craft. Boats of similar design to the Minn 3 and 4 will be inspected and must be approved by the boat judge.

Boat hulls cannot be modified. Seat configurations can be redesigned to meet team needs. Bailers and spray skirts are allowed. Participants are required to use single bladed canoe paddles to power the craft. Rudders are not allowed.

Specific hull measurements: C-4 Stock Class:
A. Maximum length of 23’ 1", Minimum weight 55 pounds from the manufacturer.
B. The boat must be specifically built by the manufacturer to accommodate 4 paddlers.
C. Minimum width at the center line, at the 4" water line is 33", at both the gunwales and 4" waterline.
D. Minimum width at the 4" waterline - 4 feet in from the bow is 16", 4 feet in from the stern is 17".
E. There is no concavity in the longitudinal axis of the hull (bow to stern) and no concavity in the cross section (side to side)
below the 7" waterline. There are minimal concave lines in the hull and no concave lines in the gunwales.
F. Minimum depths from the manufacturer: Bow = 20", Center = 13½", Stern = 17".
G. No hard line transitions in the hull of the boat. Curve of chine must be equal to at least the radius of a softball.
H. Maximum tumblehome of 2" per side.
