
Inaugural Celebrate Paddling Invitational Results
The paddling community came out for the inaugural Celebrate Paddling Invitational event in Saranac Lake on Sunday June 30 to bring Celebrate Paddling month to a close last weekend. The Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce teamed up with the Adirondack Watershed Alliance, Adirondack Lakes and Trails Outfitters and MAC’S Canoe Livery to host the inaugural Celebrate Paddling Invitational. Celebrate Paddling ADK is a month-long festival organized by several area outfitters and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail to show case the multiple paddle sport activities available in the greater Saranac Lakes Region.
There were boat demos thanks to Hornbeck Boats, ALTO, MAC’S and Placid Boatworks; a buy sell trade area and information booths for the Adirondack Watershed Institute and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail
The weather improved as the day progressed for the Sunday event on Lake Flower. There was a variety of races for youth, paddling families, high kneel canoes, and sprint kayaks. Guideboat Realty sponsored the entry fee for all youth paddlers. The fun feature race of the day was five Voyageur canoes loaded with 7 or 8 paddlers duking it out on a triangular sprint course on Lake Flower. The Saranac Lake Team with Mayor Clyde Rabideau, Janie Bevilaqua and Chamber of Commerce representatives had a strong showing. Team Hornbeck was well represented in the youth races with Rushton and Devlin Trombley finishing first and second in the Youth race. Dog Breath led the War Canoe Sprint with members of the Washington Canoe Club in hot pursuit and the Blue Crusher Flowers and Friends took third. In the three mile rec race Family Class The Labonte team from Saranac Lake with 5 people and a dog came first, the Legard/ Hart family came second and Scott Hance and Waydon Cherington came third.
The 10 mile marathon went out to Oseetah Lake and back and involved over 40 participants. Roger Gocking and Eric Young had the fastest time of the day in their tandem kayak at 1:10: 38. The fastest tandem canoe was Bruce Lee and Cathy Lipski at 1:30:40. The fastest guide boat was Andrew Jillings of Hamilton College at 1:39:59. The fastest solo canoe was Terry Kent at 1:28:42 and the fastest solo kayak was Peter Jaworski in 1:31:48.
