Long Lake Long Boat Regatta Results for 2017
The Adirondack Watershed Alliance (AWA) held its final paddle sport event of the season Saturday. The
Long Lake Long Boat Regatta was held on a beautiful summer day the 23 rd of September. Temperatures
in the 80’s, calm winds and high water led to some great competition in Long Lake.
There were three featured events in addition to the regular New York Marathon Canoe Racing
Association offering of race categories. The Adirondack Kayak Championships drew a large competitive
field, The New York State College Cup was won by a new team and the North American Voyageur Canoe
Championships featured Men, Women and Dogs!
The fastest time of the day was turned in by unlimited class kayaker Jim Mallory of West Henrietta
leading the Mens over 50 division in 1:17:49. The second fastest time of the day went to the Voyageur
team Dog Breath, from Rexford and Canada, in 1:19:21 and the third fastest time went to Unlimited
Kayak Men under 50 winner Royal McDonnell of Paul Smiths in 1:20:36. Eric Young of Mooers Forks
turned in the fastest men under 50 Touring Kayak time in 1:29:17 and James Phillips of Bergen was the
leader in the men over 50 Touring Kayak class.
The Solo Recreation class was dominated by father / son duo Morgan and Chris Hoven of Clifton Springs.
Morgan won the under 50 category in 1:34:21 while Chris won the over 50 race in 1:47:27. The fastest
C-2 Stock paddlers were Chas Billingsley of Lake Clear and Jim Minnie of Saranac Lake in 1:40:46.
Winners in the C-2 Amateur Racing Canoe category were Paul and JoAnn Olney of Westernville in
1:29:00.
A new team to the College Cup from Saint Lawrence University comprised of new comers Will Merchant,
David Brown, Nicholas Filonnito and Kiara De la Rosa, coached by Bill Short, bested two teams from
Hamilton College to take home the coveted trophy.
In all 37 boats and 80 people had a great day of paddling in Long Lake. Complete results are listed
