May 18th 2003 - Ampersand Bay to Saranac Lake Village, NY Saranac Lake NY, May 18th 2003 - 'Round the Mountain Canoe and Kayak Races draw varied field of 93 boats.

Paddlers from across the region circled Dewey Mountain on water Sunday in the sixteenth annual running of The ‘Round the Mountain Canoe Race. There were guideboats, an assortment of kayaks and a wide variety of one and two person canoes entered in the third of a series of Adirondack Races co – sponsored by the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, The Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce and MAC’S Canoe Livery in Lake Clear.

The Ampersand Bay Resort and Boat Club, on Lower Saranac Lake, hosted the race start. Paddlers covered the 10.5 - mile course by heading out on to the Lower Lake, passing Eagle and Sable Islands to the Saranac River. Participants went under the Route 3 Bridge and headed to town via the Lower Locks, through Oseetah Lake and on to the finish line in the Village of Saranac Lake. Ken Fontana of the Blue Moon Café, was on hand at the finish line with complementary Cold River Coffee and snacks for the enjoyment of the paddlers prior to the distribution of awards.

The winner of the vacation package donated by Doug Brownell of the Saranac Lake Motor Inn was Soern Peterson of Clarence Creek, Canada.

Special thanks to Grace McDonnell for pre race administration, The American Red Cross Emergency Response Communication team and the Tri-Lakes Amateur Radio Club for communication assistance; The Saranac Lake Village Police Department, and the volunteers who assisted with registration, timing, and safety out on the course.

The 2004 'Round the Mountain Canoe and Kayak Races drew a record field of 106 vessels to the Ampersand Bay Resort for the start of the 10.5 - mile race on the lakes and river around Dewey Mountain in Saranac Lake. The race was part of the New York Marathon Canoe Racing Association Points Series and the second race in the Top of the State Series. The region was well represented in the winner's circle. Many local paddlers finished strong in their classes against some of the best paddlers in the Northeast!

The 'Round the Mountain is the second race in the Adirondack Canoe Race Series of events organized cooperatively by MAC'S Canoe Livery, The Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce. Other sponsors include Ace Kayaks, Wenonah Canoes, The Blue Moon Café, Grasse River Boatworks and Gauthier's Saranac Lake Motor Inn. The next event in the series will be the Adirondack Arc 9 Miler to Tupper Lake on Saturday, June 5. Race organizers thank the Ampersand Bay Resort for hosting the start, the Red Cross Amateur Radio Quick Response Team for communication assistance during the race and the volunteers who helped out with safety boats, timing and shuttles during the event.

Marc Gillespie and Paul Olney turned in the fastest time of the day in their two- person Pro boat at 1:25:10. The fastest kayak was David Wiltey posting a time of 1:27:36. Complete results were as follows:

Saranac Lake Flatwater Weekend

Canoe and Kayak Races

Over 100 boats participate in two days of paddlesport events in Saranac Lake

In spite of dire weather predictions, a great crowd turned out for the inaugural Saranac Lake Flatwater Weekend. The festivities included the ‘Round the Mountain Canoe and Kayak races on Saturday, and the scenic Saranac River Ramble on Sunday. Race headquarters for the weekend was the Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club where participants enjoyed a spaghetti dinner and live music on Saturday evening.

THE ‘ROUND THE MOUNTAIN CANOE AND KAYAK RACE drew a field of 73 boats. The race started at Ampersand Bay Resort on Lower Saranac Lake. From Ampersand Bay, paddlers headed westward up the lake to the mouth of the Saranac River; proceeded down river, negotiating a short carry around the lower locks, then paddled through Oseetah Lake and Lake Flower, to the finish at Riverfront Park. (Approximate distance 10.5 miles.) Highlights included a number of first time paddlers, New York Marathon Canoe Association Points Contenders, and a number of local participants.

The fastest family class boat was paddled by Ken and Colin Streb of Rochester. Ed Mazdzer of Saranac Lake paddled the fastest recreational kayak. Dave Thomas, of Watertown, turned in the fastest C – 1Stock time. Chris Hoyt and Dean Slocum, of Hinesburg, VT, rowed their guideboat to victory. David Hunter of Lake Placid led the field in the C-1 amateur division, Brian McDonnell, Lake Clear, and John Ders, South Otselic, led a competitive C-2 Stock class, Alec Davis of Ballston Lake and Roger Henry of Rexford were the fastest C-2 Amateur paddlers. Terry Kent led the kayak racers and established the fastest time of the day with a time of 1:24:15.

THE SARANAC RIVER RAMBLE Started at The Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club located on Route 3 toward Bloomingdale. There were two race courses: Novices paddle approximately 2 miles from Pine Street Bridge - down river to the Fish and Game Club. The team of Amelia, Royal and Brian McDonnell and Glen Vandewinckle and Annie Ripton cruised to victory in a Wenonah Minnesota 4 canoe. The 10- mile race for canoes, kayaks and guideboats was a true ramble as paddlers went up, down and back up the river. Spectators had 3 chances to see the paddlers in action!

The Adirondack Canoe Race Series is organized through a new organization - The Adirondack Watershed Alliance. The AWA promotes water related events and activities; educates park residents and visitors about the value of clean water; is developing a stewardship network to enhance recreational opportunities and provide outdoor employment opportunities. R ace sponsors include: MAC’S Canoe Livery, Wenonah Canoes, GRB , Cold River Coffee at the Blue Moon Café, The Hotel Saranac, Gauthiers Motor Inn, Bluseed Studio and Ampersand Bay.

The next race in the series is the Adirondack Arc 9 Miler to Tupper Lake, June 4.
New volunteers are always welcome. For more information call MAC’S Canoe Race Hotline at 891- 2744.

2007

THE ‘ROUND THE MOUNTAIN CANOE AND KAYAK RACE drew a field of 78 canoes, guideboats, kayaks and a war canoe on Saturday in Saranac Lake. Near perfect weather conditions inspired a number of first time paddlers, New York Marathon Canoe Association Points Contenders, and a number of local participants.

(Approximate distance 10.5 miles.) The ‘Round the Mountain was designated a New York Marathon Canoe Race Association (NYMCRA) Points Series Race attracting many of the hottest paddlers in the state to Saranac Lake for friendly competition and incredible scenery.

The fastest family class boat was paddled by Richard Stockwell, Jr. and his grandfather Ray Morris of South Glens Falls crossing the finish line in 2:11:21. Gerhard Munger of Lowville powered the fastest guideboat in a time of 1:48:18. Benoit Gauthier of Gloucester, Ontario paddled the fastest kayak and recorded the fastest time of the day at 1:27:15. Terry Kent of Lake Placid paddled the fastest solo canoe of the day keeping pace with the kayaks and crossing the finish line in 1:28:51. Chas Billingsley of Lake Clear, and Bruce Kennedy of Peru paddle the fastest two person Stock canoe in 1:37:16. Roger Henry and Brian Young paddled the fastest amateur racing canoe in 1:30:02. Jan Perrin of Manoria, Wisconsin and Joan Henry of Rexford were the fastest women’s canoe team of the day with a time of 1:37:28. The leader of the solo stock class was Becky Sutter of Saranac Lake for the women (1:49:23) and Dave Thomas of Watertown for the men (1:43:56.) The Plaid Paddlers captured the 4-person canoe category in a time of 1:45:19. The Snow Monkeys, a ten-person war canoe team from Saranac Lake, captained by Randy Young, used teamwork to cruise across the finish line in a time of 1:53:48. Marie Godbout and Elizabeth McMahon of Pointe Claire, Quebec cruised in their 2-person kayak around the course in 2:12:27 for first place in their class.

The Adirondack Canoe Race Series is organized through The Adirondack Watershed Alliance. The AWA promotes water related events and activities; is developing a stewardship network to enhance recreational opportunities and provide outdoor employment opportunities. R ace sponsors include: MAC’S Canoe Livery, Wenonah Canoes, Cold River Coffee at the Blue Moon Café, Ampersand Bay Resort, Gauthier’s Saranac Lake Motor Inn, Mississippi Kayaks,

Campmor, and Adirondack Motel. Thank you to the Volunteers and the Adirondack Amateur Radio Club for providing communications during the event.

The next race in the series is the Tupper Lake 9 Miler, June 16. The 9 Miler will be part of the No Octane Regatta activities being organized in Tupper Lake by the Adirondack Museum, Traditional Arts of Upstate New York (TAUNY) the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Adirondack Watershed Alliance. New volunteers are always welcome. For more information call MAC’S Canoe Race Hotline at 891- 2744.
